Adams County organizations provide Thanksgiving meals
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Thanksgiving is about being thankful for what you have, and for the last 15 to 20 years, the Plainsman Steakhouse and Lounge has been providing food for The Salvation Army dinner on Thanksgiving.
They supplied turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, and a personal pie. The dinner was to-go style and could be found at Adams County Fairgrounds west entrance. Plainsman Co-Owner, Kayla Edwards said this is their way of giving back to the community.
“It’s just kinda become a tradition,” said Edwards. “Some of our local customers and stuff have made it their tradition as well as to helping out and just kind of become a big family event for all of us.”
Edwards and her husband have been owners of the Plainsman for five years. She said the previous owner of the Plainsman started the tradition and it’s something she wanted to continue. Edwards also explained what it means to be part of a valued tradition.
“Just kinda makes you feel good,” said Edwards. “You know our family’s been blessed and so it’s just nice to give back to the community and those who might have struggling times.”
But they weren’t the only place serving hot meals on Thanksgiving. The Kensington hosted their ‘Thanksgiving Thank You,’ inviting the public and emergency responders to a Thanksgiving meal.
Kim Hawke took over as Executive Director this spring, making it her first year hosting holiday events at the facility.
“We hold events here pretty routinely,” said Hawke. “So being a holiday it’s always hard to know if we’re going to get a lot of traffic in here you know. ”But we are intentionalist to invite people who we knew were going to be at work just like we are because our job never stops; and so serving the community or serving people you’re just always serving 24/7."
Hawke also shared what Thanksgiving means to her.
“Thanksgiving is always just a time to kind of reflect back on your year, or things in your life and pinpoint the things that you’re thankful for versus you know focusing on the things that may have not worked out,” said Hawke. “But it’s nice to be able to share that with the residents that we live with and serve with daily and their families as well.”
Kayla Edwards said, “Thanksgiving in general is just being thankful for everything that we’ve been blessed with and being able to give back to the community and leaving here at the end of the day makes you just feel like you’ve done something to help out.”
Some showed what Thanksgiving means to them by volunteering.
“We just appreciated what we go through our lives and stuff like that and we’re out helping other people that are less fortunate than what we are,” said volunteer, Terry Brown. “Still doing family time; I brought my family down here so we’re still getting together but we’re just helping and meeting other people and helping out the city of Hastings.”
Brown said his sons are visiting from New Mexico; and the holidays are a great opportunity to help those in need.
