In preparation for the storm season, we had the opportunity to speak with Erica Carpenter, an emergency response coordinator for Two Rivers. Carpenter shared valuable insights and tips on staying safe during severe weather events.

Carpenter discussed the following important points:

Terminology:

  • Tornado Watch: Weather conditions that could lead to severe storms and tornado formation. Be prepared to act quickly if the weather escalates.
  • Tornado Warning: This indicates a tornado has been spotted or detected by weather radar, meaning a tornado is occurring or expected imminently. Seek immediate refuge in the safest location available.
  • Tornado Emergency: An extremely rare situation with a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage due to a confirmed violent tornado. Seek immediate shelter in the safest place possible.

If a warning or watch is issued while you are on the road:

  • DO NOT shelter under an overpass in your car.
  • DO NOT shelter outside your car under an overpass or tree.
  • Find the nearest building and seek shelter in the basement or a windowless room.

If a warning or watch is issued while you are at home:

  • Shelter in the lowest level of your building.
  • Choose a room with small or no windows.
  • If you are in an apartment, shelter under the stairwell or in a windowless hallway on the lowest level.

Items to keep in your shelter area:

  • Helmets, pillows, or a mattress to protect yourself from falling debris.
  • Shoes protect your feet from broken glass or other objects.
  • Whistle or noise-making device to draw attention if you are trapped.
  • Baby formula, diapers, and other necessary items for your children.
  • Pet carriers, leashes, and other pet supplies.
