Grand Island native hoping for major music opportunity thanks to online contest
Voting ends this Friday at 11 p.m.
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Chasing his dreams and an opportunity of a lifetime, Grand Island native David Shockey is in the running to have his song recorded as a duet along side a major recording artist.
Shockey, now going by the artist name “Just Shockey,” is apart of an online music contest in hopes of singing along side acclaimed musician Jordin Sparks.
His song Who Cares is among the top three finalists on the Gala Music website, which is hosting the online contest.
The polls have been open since Tuesday of this week, and the artist’s song with the most votes will feature Sparks on their record.
Shockey and has seen a variety of career successes upon packing up and chasing his musical ventures to Los Angeles including making it to the Hollywood round of American Idol, and now recently opening for Jordin Sparks at the Veecon music event at Colts Stadium Indianapolis Indiana.
While he didn’t make it as far as he’d hoped on American Idol, he says he’s seeing this as a new opportunity and chance to keep the momentum in his career going. “I opened to Jordan last Saturday at the Colts Stadium in Indianapolis and that was wild.” Shockey goes on to say, “Success lives next door to failure and you have to just keep believing and I did and what a blessing.”
Growing up in Grand Island Shockey performed in musical theater at Northwest High School and played venues at his mom’s restaurant The Bunkhouse, and also has a following at the Art Bar in Hastings. He’s now hopeful his local fan base can help get him to the finish line in the contest. “Playing the Midwest is my absolute favorite, because it’s so real and I know there’s a connection there. And to be together in this victory means a lot to me in my artistry,” Shockey said.
