GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island City Council is set to take a vote at their meeting on Tuesday night about hiring their new finance director.

The candidate they’re looking at is Matthew Gleason. He’s currently an instructor of business and director of accounting and audit services for Peru State College.

Gleason will take the finance director spot from Patrick Brown, who was recently promoted to the assistant city administrator spot, and has done both jobs at the same time in the last nine months, and brown said Gleason is well qualified for the job.

“He’s a certified public accountant, certified management accountant, certified finance manager, and then a certified internal auditor,” Brown said.

According to the city council agenda, if hired, Gleason would oversee the finance department. He would also be responsible for day-to-day city finance operations.

He will be a liaison between the city and various community boards. Brown said the city is lucky to find a candidate like Gleason.

“It’s been a challenge for many organizations, municipalities to find finance directors, and so when you come across one with these credentials and some of the experience that he has it’s really good for the city in moving forward,” Brown said.

Brown told Local4 News hiring Gleason would help him focus on other aspects of the job.

“It’s still going to free up the administration side to do a little bit more high level planning, financial forecasting for the city, a little bit more concentration on, on budget and procurement,” Brown said.

According to the city council agenda if Gleason’s hiring is approved, he is expected to start on May 6, and salary would be $129,773.97.
