A massive winter storm is causing power outages and traffic chaos across much of the U.S. Midwest, including Kentucky, which declared a state of emergency. Fierce winter weather is also pounding Newfoundland and parts of Atlantic Canada.
Seven people were transported to local hospitals following a chain reaction crash Thursday evening on Highway 281 near Doniphan.
The crash involved six vehicles, including a semi-tractor and trailer.
Rigoberto Palma-Perez, a 47-year-old Grand Island man, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The other people transported included Kodi Bucy, 50, of Glenvil; Kimberly Funk, 47, of Hastings; Amber Snyder, 28, of North Platte; Jesse Flanagan, 36, of Hastings, and a juvenile female.
The wreck occurred at Clarice Street and Highway 281. Hall County deputies responded to the scene at 6:49 p.m.
The trouble began when a red Cadillac attempted to turn onto Highway 281 from the Dollar General parking lot and struck a southbound semi. “This caused a chain reaction of events that led to several additional accidents,” the Hall County Sheriff’s Department said.
During the investigation, a Hall County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit was struck while a deputy was providing traffic control. The patrol unit sustained major damage.
The deputy was outside of the vehicle and wasn’t injured. That accident was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol.
The accident remains under investigation. “However, it is believed weather was a factor in the crash,” the release says.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist.
