KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - Dry conditions have caused the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Aaron Jameson to issue a burn ban until the area receives measurable moisture.

There is always a statewide open burning ban on all bonfires, outdoor trash fires, and fires for the purpose of clearing land.

However, a permit can be obtained from the local fire chief on a form prescribed by the state.

There will be no open burn permits issued as the department aims to preserve the lives and property of the citizens served in the fire district.

Warmer conditions, wind, and low relative humidity caused land to dry quickly.

Chief Jameson also encourages residents to avoid using burn barrels during the ban.

Extreme caution should always be used when conducting hot work, such as welding, torching, grinding, or using burn barrels.

Burn barrels should have an appropriate screen on top to deter burning debris from escaping the barrel.
