Arbor Day program
The city of Hastings will celebrate Arbor Day with a program 1:30 p.m. April 26 at St. Michael’s Elementary School, 721 Creighton Ave.
Volunteers will plant a swamp white oak and catalpa tree to provide shade near the playground on the northwest part of the school grounds.
City Tree Board member Joe Kindig, who owns a tree nursery and provided the trees, suggested the collaboration with Hastings Catholic Schools. Funds for both trees were donated by Hastings Sunrise Rotary.
During the Arbor Day program, city Parks and Recreation Department staff members will speak about the history of Arbor Day, the value of trees and proper tree care. City Councilman Marc Rowan, the council’s Tree Board liaison, will read a city proclamation for Arbor Day.
This is the 34th year Hastings has been named a Tree City community. To receive Tree City recognition, a community must maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrate Arbor Day.

The League of Women Voters of Hastings will present its final candidate forum of the 2024 primary season April 26, featuring individuals vying for seats on the Adams County Board of Commissioners.
The event runs noon to 1 p.m. at the YWCA of Adams County, 2525 W. Second St. Candidates for the District 2, 4 and 6 seats on the board have been invited to attend. The event is free and open to the public.
